Job Classifications for Research Support

Academic units may not directly charge federal grants or contracts for any portion of the salaries of administrative and clerical staff engaged in providing baseline departmental services, including secretarial and clerical support, procurement of materials, supplies, and services, arranging travel and meetings, accounting and bookkeeping. These salary expenses should be treated as indirect costs and should not appear in the proposal budget for federally sponsored projects.

Starting salaries vary with the qualifications of the selected candidate, usually falling between the entrance level and first quartile of the salary range. Staff benefits include: hospitalization and major medical insurance, group life insurance, contributions to retirement funds, FICA payments, and in some cases, dental insurance and long-term disability insurance. The cost of these benefits as a percentage of salary vary considerably according to the mix of benefits, ranging from 22% at higher salary levels to 53% at lower salary levels. A detailed chart of staff benefit chargeable to sponsored accounts is provided in the Benefits Table.
